Data Protection Compliance Training and Privacy Impact Assessment Services

The Data Protection Act (DPA) provides a framework which balances the rights of individuals to personal privacy with the legitimate need for organisations to use personal information. Anyone who processes personal information must comply with the eight principles of the Data Protection Act, which make sure that personal information is:

  • Processed fairly and lawfully
  • Obtained only for specified and lawful purposes
  • Adequate, relevant and not excessive
  • Accurate and up-to-date
  • Not kept for longer than necessary
  • Processed in accordance processed in line with individual’s rights
  • Secure
  • Not transferred to countries outside the European Economic Area without adequate protection

Privacy Impact Assessment Training

A Privacy Impact Assessment is a review of the potential privacy implications of a project, initiative, joint venture, development, office move, installation or upgrade of CCTV etc.  PIAs are mandatory for central government departments and recommended for all other public and private organisations.  The draft EU Regulation which will upgrade European data protection law includes a requirement for mandatory PIAs for all organisations.

This phase scopes a two hour training session to introduce delegates to the principles of data protection and how they apply in practice with a workshop to try out examples of Privacy Impact Assessments using a tailored PIA tool.

Objectives of Training

  • To introduce or refresh the data protection principles
  • To illustrate how the principles apply in practice
  • To introduce the Privacy Impact Assessment regime as a useful project management tool
  • To allow delegates to try out PIAs using the tailored PIA tool
